Great local choice for those of you who enjoy a local mom 'n pop shop and the occasional encased meat & cheese. Then again who doesn't? (Sorry, my fellow vegetarians.) The place is very reminiscent of the traditional Coney Island / hot dog lunch counters in NYC and urban Detroit. I like it because it's "old skool", not hipster nor pseudo retro. It's the real deal, just the way I remember it as a kid. The crowd is very local with blue collar workers sitting at the counter and senior couples occupying many of the booths. These people are hungry and need to get back to work. It is strangely quiet, except for the sound of the employees calling out to the line cooks and each other. Sherry and Christina cover the floor and are in constant motion making sure everyone is cared for like family. Service is superb and my glass was never empty, despite the crowd. I thinks the best way to go is with 2 chili dogs ($2 each) with shredded cheese and a side of slaw ($1.50) to top them off, dixie style. If you have a big appetite, add a chili burger ($3) or a side of Fritos (yes, Fritos!) Make sure you come early so you can get a seat, as the place tends to fill up early. They are open from 10-4pm, so start making your lunch plans now. Enjoy!

A gem! A treasure in the depths of downtown St. Petersburg! Established in 1926, this place was among the first fast food joints to grace the downtowns of many American towns, long before the cookie-cutter franchises came along to glom up the culinary landscape with their pre-fab signage and quasi-plastic fare. Upon entering, it's like a time machine trip to the 1930s. Not much has changed here, and that's why it appeals to me. Looked and smelled just like the Coney Island in Wesleyville, Erie PA, which my father loved so much. 2 dollar chili dogs (by chili I mean the coney sauce, no beans just small bits of meat on top of your dog or burger (3 bucks for the burger) but well worth it, as it came fresh as can be, with just the perfect amount of crisp on the edges. Order it traditional style with onions and mustard. No ketchup. It ruins the chili. No fries. Deal with it. Finished with a nice handmade Strawberry milkshake for my dessert. Three sisters work there and were as pleasant as can be. I'm going back tomorrow on my old 1920s bicycle to take a picture with a backdrop of the same vintage. Thanks Coney Island for renewing my faith in DTSP Oh, and they still serve Buttermilk! Just wow.

I have passed by this place for years and finally decided to stop and get my hot dog fix. It was a Thursday about 2 in the afternoon so I was expecting a very light crowd and that's what I found. Walking in the front door is like going back in time and I was immediately reminded of trips to the drugstore lunch counter with my grandpa growing up. There are comfy booths lined up to the left and an old school counter and stools to the right. I bellied up to counter, ordered three dogs with onions/chili, some coleslaw and a sweet tea. I'm picky as hell about my tea, and theirs was on point. The coleslaw was sweet for my taste and the dogs were pretty average, but the feel and look of this place is the real draw. It was truly vintage...no fake memorabilia. The service was friendly and quick and I'm looking forward to getting back and trying their chili burger. For cozy comfort food on the cheap, this is the spot!

Talk about a piece of history. Coney Island is one of those places you have to experience to feel the stories of olde that stay within the walls. The tiny booths, the limited seating in general, lower and narrow doorways, the incredibly small bathrooms, and the simplistic menu. This place even has the window on the outside leftover from times of segregation. Really wild to see that. The menu is incredibly simple -- hotdog, burger, chili, and buttermilk...among a few others which I can't remember. Simple, easy, and memorable. That's all I could ask for. I'd come back to Coney Island time and time again just to soak in the rich history. I also love that they have the case with old gum, candy bars, and mints at the checkout counter. So many memories of old diners with this. Good stuff, Coney Island. I'm a fan.

Nice little spot. Been there since 1926. Lots of old equipment that still works fine. We sat at the counter on round turning stools, just like the old days. Fast, friendly service and the food was great. The prices we're very reasonable. I loved the place.

Rude servers, didn't say a word when serving food. My son went to go ask for Ketchup and they argued that it would ruin the chili. Wanted for a chiliburger but servers actually argued again that they couldn't do that and made a scene than said it would be 5 cents since it would ruin the chili. Terrible experience and doesn't make sense. It's the customer's decision what to put on their food.

We have been coming here for years since we used to live in st Pete. It's been awhile since we moved and we had the same high expectations when we went back. It was still good. But something was different. The mixture of the chili? The ratio of chili to hotdog? I couldn't put my finger on it but it wasn't quite as good as we have been used to. Also the chili had a much spicier kick than it used to which I didn't really like. We also had a vanilla milkshake that was made the old fashioned way and that was truly great. I definitely want to go back because hopefully they were just having a bad day. We love this place and it is a real piece of history.

I love this place! Nothing fancy but taste really good. Nice burgers and shakes. Always makes me feel like I'm back in 6-70's. I'm enjoying dining here in late lunch time and watching old people. I love St. Pete, I love Coney Island Sandwich Shop!

This is the place that exists in all the fly over cities. More trendy towns charge too much rent and citizens demand more panache for these hot dog stands to still exist. At Coney Island and all the other hot dog stands in mid America a waitress with an odd hair style calls you Hon, a man in a t shirt and a paper hat grills countless dogs and a fat guy at the register asks proudly how you liked your lunch. This is like the place our dads took us and where we take sons, nieces, or kids we borrowed for the afternoon. The dogs are nothing special, the buns are plastic bag style, the mustard is yellow, the chopped onions lack designer labels, and the chili is just ground beef with chili powder. The tables here are always taken and most of the stools hold lone diners. Keep on keeping on Coney Island Sandwich Shop.

I believe George B. said he couldn't get a chili burger. Well, how come my wife gets them all the time? Coney Island is great. We are from Johnstown PA and had a Coney Island there. It's like being a kid again! The chili dogs are great, and my wife loves the chili burgers! It's too bad we live in Citrus Park Tampa and my wife doesn't to St. Pete for pedicures anymore! I'd go there every day if I could!

If you are in the mood for a good coney dog this place will satisfy you. Great value, old-fashioned style coney dogs. I probably could have eaten half a dozen! :)

A historic diner in downtown St. Pete with some of the best chili dogs, burgers, and shakes on the planet. The same people have been running the joint forever. Really a special place.

Used to come here as a kid! Went today the food was gross and greasy the chips were stale and the iced tea was horrible and the waitress was rude!!!! I am no longer a fan they need to close that shit hole down

I love this hot dog establishment with all my heart. Thanks to a friend for introducing me, it filled a hot dog shaped spot in my heart. Coney island is cheap, clean, fast and delicious. Im small, I don't have much room to eat a big meal. 2 bucks for a chili dog and 2 bucks for a root beer float and I feel great about how much it didn't cost me. I hope they never change the old shop look.

A very cool place that has been open for over 75 years. It definitely gives you an old soda fountain feel. My father and I stopped in for lunch yesterday and enjoyed it. Of course, we like a good hotdog about anywhere! However, sandwich shop is a misnomer. The serve chili dogs, burgers and BLTs. That pretty much covers the entire menu. The dogs are well prepared and tasty. The home made shakes, with real milk and ice cream, are a great way to wash them down. Service is quick, friendly but, no-nonsense. The ladies working the counter have clearly been there for a while and know what they are doing. The really hustle! Overall, a very nice experience.

We just had lunch there on the recommendation of a (local) friend. We are glad we went -- we had the chili dogs, a bag of plain (NOT kettle, thankfully) chips, and a Coke. Our server was great, and she did convince us to try the chili dogs instead of plain ones...good thing she did, because they were terrific. We will definitely go back again -- the next time to have a chili dog and a shake!

First of all, I don't know when the menu on Yelp was last updated, but it is definitely incorrect. There are a million other items on there that are not available at Coney Island Sandwich Shop. We came here based off the posted menu. So, we were a little disappointed that a sandwich shop didn't really serve sandwiches. Anyway, what they do serve are typical grill items. Small menu posted up above the grill. Burgers and hot dogs, really. No fries. We ordered a total of 4 hot dogs (2 with chili, 2 with just ketchup and onions), a bag of chips, and split a strawberry shake. Total = $12. Not bad. Service was pretty fast. The food's really nothing special. Small hot dogs you can probably make yourself. The chili dogs weren't for me, so I can't speak about those. But the shake was nice and thick. It's simple and good, yes. But simple enough that I can make that kind of hot dog at home. At least the price isn't outrageous.

Been going here since i was a kid, hasn't changed and the Chili Dogs and shakes are the best around. The nostalgia and quaintness is A-1, hope it survives for my kids and grandkids.

  • Josh S.

I was going to give 3 stars, but then I realized 3 stars would only be valid if you added a dollar to everything on the menu and took away the personality and charm. So essentially, an extra star for value and nostalgia. Gotta love the greasy chili that really only works on cheap hotdogs, and I mean that in the nicest way possible. My wife's grandparents make the same kind of chili and I always look forward to it.

$1.72 chili dog...........nothing on the menu cracks 5 bucks.................been around for over 80 years. Alot of shit can happen in 80 years. And if this world makes any sort of sense 80 years from now Coney Island Sandwich Shop will still be around. And some asshole like myself will be writing a review alot like this one. If i live until 106 years of age i may quite possibly be that asshole.

I worked just a one minute walk from this tiny little place... I miss those days. I never strayed from a chocolate shake and a chili dog all the way. Well once, I got a burger. All of which were served fast, hot and tasty just the way you'd expect from a joint like this. Simple and yummy. In all honesty, they don't make places like this anymore. No frills, just a simple joint to get some decent (and cheap) food. Older guys working the flat top and the counter, while the waitresses serve up food to businessmen, local regulars and teens stopping for a bite. While I didn't know what to expect my first time, I picked up the ropes pretty quick. They are cash only so make sure you bring some. Also, they don't have fries which is a bummer. My only other complaint is that they are pretty set in their ways. I asked for cheese on the chili dog once and was informed they don't sell chili cheese dogs.

Living in Gainesville these past couple of years means that a trek to Coney Island is a very rare moment indeed. It is one of my top favorite places of all time to have a nosh in the Tampa Bay Area. 2 chili dogs all the way and a chocolate shake is possibly the only thing I have ever ordered here... and I've been haunting their doors since the 1980s. They, of course, have been there seemingly forever. This place is a holdover from an era now long gone. I sincerely hope it stays exactly the same for the rest of my days. A sublime experience. My only complaint is that I have to drive all the way to St Pete to have them... OK: My second complaint is one of dietary origin - since I have eliminated a lot of the sodium from my diet, places like this suddenly seem vey salty. I wish they'd back off on the salt in the chili a bit - I can add salt, but you can't take it out.

The best hotdog I have ever had. Get the chili dog with a side of slaw and crystal hot sauce. I like a little slaw on top with a drizzle of crystal.

I really don't see the appeal, and certainly nothing near a real Coney Island (or Nathan's) hotdog. No sauerkraut (what's with that?), bad tasting "chili" over a lamer tasting dog - even my teenage son wouldn't eat it. Maybe just not what I was expecting. The corner vendors do better.

  • Jeff N.

Im a native Detroiter. This is nothing like a coney from Detroit. The sauce was meaty not creamy. It was ok flavor but nothing great. No fryer either. That means no chili fries. They are also open very scarcely. Its down the street from Tropicana field but is never open for baseball games.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. This place hasn't changed it's menu except for the prices, and then just barely. I wouldn't say they're "traditional" coneys as I had when I lived on Long Island. It's a bun length dog on a white bun, with choice of just a few toppings. I'll definitely be returning to try the few other items on the menu, but will be going back for cheap dogs and awesome hand dipped milkshakes.

I wanted to like this place. The geographic elitism that pushes my nose up at Pizza shops claiming NY heritage didn't apply to this soda fountain style diner aspiring to Coney Island tubesteak fame. The walls are a memorial to workers past, their faces look down, inscribed with birth and death dates. Historical drawings of St. Pete and environs surround them. This establishment thrives on past lives, on the memory of simple hot dogs served on boardwalks. The regulars (and there are regulars) are friendly, jokingly lamenting about their wives, plans, and former jobs. They are served from memory, though one cracked wise about having to 'read the menu.' The menu consists of a single plastic board adorned with about a dozen items - the most expensive is a sub-four-dollar BLT. They've got burgers, dogs, spartanly simple sandwiches, and milkshakes. I ordered two dogs, one their way (chili, onions, mustard) and one mine (mustard, but would've added relish if they had it). The dogs were disappointingly limp - i like crisp skin and burstingly juicy meat, and the chili was little more than ground beef - no spice, minimal sauce, and no beans. The chocolate milkshake was a step up - hand scooped with real ice cream and a dash of malt. I might head back just to see if salvation lies in other dishes, but for now Coney Island remains an unrealized abstraction nestled next to a freeway instead of a seashore.

You wouldn't normally use simplicity and perfect in the same sentence but it's the simplicity that makes it perfect, best chili dogs and shakes around!

this is the place to go to make others jealous. get in there, order a couple dogs all the way then text your friends a pic and update your facebook status. Girl/Boyfriend mad at you? Should you get flowers? No. Swing on by and get some dogs to go. Cheaper and taste better than flowers. Maybe if those edible bouquet places sold a coney island chili dog bouquet i'd actually order one.

My brother finally got me to Coney Island Sandwich Shop after YEARS of raving about it. Step back in time because this place has a history. From the staff to the vintage tilework in the bathrooms, this is the real deal. Excellent chili dog but the star of the show was the coleslaw! If you love coleslaw like I love coleslaw, this place is the best! Tastes just like my sweet Grandma makes and that is some stellar coleslaw! Cheap eats, friendly staff, nice touch of nostalgia, really good chili dogs and GREAT coleslaw!

Don't ask for cheese on your dog!! You'll get run soup Nazi style! LOL

My dad went here all his life and I've been going here since I was a child. Maybe it's the nostalgia talking, but this is the best chili dog ever! I'm a big dude and 3 hot dogs fills me up. Plus a shake, of course.

  • Julie T.

You order the chili dog with everything. Period. It may be a bit downmarket to the fancypants type, but I've always found it to be charming and cheap. The chili is good too.

Classic Coney dogs... Why try anything else... 2 Dogs and a hand-made milkshake for under $6... Wow! Plus the staff is Great!!!

After opening it's doors in 1926, Coney Island has stood the test of time for 84 years and is still going. Great food and great prices. Although some people wish they served beer or french fries, the menu that hasn't changed since they open make this gem even more nostalgic.

    (5)
  • Felipe G.

Coney Island is in my mind a quintessential St. Petersburg institution chock full of character and dishing out nostalgia and yummy hot dogs for 80+ years. The ambiance is mid century diner with plenty of stainless steel+white tile, brown and red vinyl stools/booths, a long formica counter, and a plain white menu board that has hardly changed in all those years. Of course the main draw are the hot dogs (always sold in twos) probably followed by the milk-shakes. The dogs maintain a perfect balance between the frank, yellow mustard, raw chopped onions, and chili. However if one thing stands out more than all the rest of the ingredients, and is probably the secret to their success, it is the chili. At first glance it looks like nothing more than just seasoned ground beef, but let me tell you there is something special happening in their big pots of chili. I have many great childhood memories eating here, it always seemed extra special treat when my dad would bring home a brown paper bag of chili dogs after a day of work. It is definitely worth a trip if you are a hot dog aficionado or just want a great trip down memory lane to a simpler time.

I gave a co-worker a few options of places to eat that we hadn't been to, and I was at first disappointed that he chose this place, but I now have no regrets. I did not grow up in this area, so it didn't give me any feelings of nostalgia, but it was cool to go into a place that's been around over 75 years I have to admit. This is primarily a hot dog place, so that's what I ordered. I started with two chili dogs, and the waitress asked if I would like some hot sauce. Although not something I would normally toss on a hot dog I figured "why not?" so I had her bring me a bottle of Tabasco. I ate the first chili dog just the way it came, the chili may not be the most flavorful or meaty I've ever had, but I felt it enhanced the hot dog nicely. I added Tabasco to the second chili dog, and somehow the flavors of the sauce, chili, and hot dog just work. I ordered two more chili dogs afterwards. This place isn't fancy, but hot dogs aren't fancy. The service was excellent, the price was right, and the hot dogs were solid, I would go back.

Meh. I could take it or leave it. The chili dog and milk shake were good but nothing that I would rave about. The menu is very limited and they charge extra for everything. CASH ONLY!

Get a chili dog. Get a shake. Get served by friendly, but no non-sense women who have worked there forever. Soak in the crazy ambiance that hasn't changed in over 50 years. Check out the little window were they served African American customers in the horrible days of segregation. Look at the pictures and portraits of former workers who have been a part of this culinary institution. Then, when it is all over, you will realize that the food was good, but more importantly, you have been in a place that kept what is good about the past and let go of all of the bad.

Very nostalgic place. It seems as if time has stood still in this establishment. The food is very old school and simple. Stick with a dog or a burger. Not too many places 3 guys can eat for under $20.

Coney Island is the great Americana diner. Hot dog and burger joint that's been a St Pete tradition since 1926. I mean this ain't five guys, this is the git and grease the way hot dogs and burgers need to be made. You can have table service or sit up at the bar. You feel like you stepped back in time entering the establishment. So if you want a traditional hot dog joint this is it. I highly recommend this for you lunch spot.
